How to Get Your Business Recommended on ChatGPT
ChatGPT recommends your business when three things line up: AI systems can identify you clearly (consistent name, location, and services across the web), independent sources vouch for you (trade press, directories, forums, comparison articles), and your own pages answer buyer questions in plain, quotable language. You cannot pay to appear inside the answer. You earn it, the same way you earn a referral.
Buyers stopped starting at Google. A procurement manager sourcing a new supplier now opens ChatGPT and types "who are the best CNC machining shops for aerospace-grade aluminum parts in the Midwest?" The model answers with three or four company names. She contacts those companies. Everyone else is invisible to her.
That answer is the new shortlist. Getting your business into it is a specific job with specific inputs. Here is how the decision works and what to do about it.
How does ChatGPT decide which businesses to recommend?
ChatGPT does not rank web pages the way Google does. It builds an answer from what it understands about the entities in a topic: the companies, their products, and how they relate. Three inputs shape that understanding.
First, identity. The model needs to know who you are without ambiguity. If your company name, location, and services read differently on your website, your LinkedIn, and the trade directories, you become a fuzzy entity. Fuzzy entities get left out, because the model will not confidently recommend a business it cannot describe.
Second, reputation from others. AI systems are trained to distrust self-promotion. Your homepage calling itself a leading supplier means little. A distributor listing, a trade publication mention, or an engineer on a forum naming your shop carries real weight. The model repeats what independent sources already say.
Third, quotable content. When the model reaches your site, it is looking for liftable facts. A page that opens with "we have been committed to quality since 1985" gives it nothing. A page that states "we hold ISO 9001 and AS9100, machine tolerances to ±0.0005 inch, and ship most orders in five days" gives it something to quote, with your name attached.
Why doesn't ChatGPT mention my business?
Run a quick test. Ask ChatGPT "what does [your company] do?" in a logged-out window. If the answer is wrong, thin, or describes a different company, the problem is identity. The model cannot recommend you for a job it does not know you do.
If the description is accurate but you still never appear in "best supplier" style answers, the problem is one of the other two inputs. Either nobody independent vouches for you in the sources the model reads, or your pages do not state the specifics that would earn the mention. Most manufacturers we audit have all three gaps in different proportions.
How do I get my business recommended on ChatGPT?
Five moves, in order of leverage.
Fix your entity data. Write one canonical description of your company and use it word for word on your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, and every directory. Claim your Google knowledge panel. Check what Wikidata says about you and correct it. This is unglamorous and it is the foundation. AI search visibility work starts here for a reason.
Earn third-party mentions. Get named in the places the model cites: trade publications, industry directories, comparison articles, and the forums where your buyers ask questions. If no "best X for Y" article exists in your category, that is an opening. The first thorough one often becomes the answer the model quotes.
Publish the specifics competitors hide. Tolerances, certifications, lead times, materials, minimum order quantities, capacity. Engineers want these, and so does the model. Numbers are quotable in a way adjectives never are.
Add structured data. Organization, Product, and FAQPage schema tell machines what things are on your pages. It is free, invisible to visitors, and one of the few levers fully in your control.
Answer buyer questions directly. Build pages and FAQ sections around the exact questions buyers ask, and put the answer in the first sentence. This is the format AI engines reward and it doubles as content that ranks.
See where you stand first
Before you change anything, get a baseline. The free AEO Prompt Generator turns your industry, buyer, and product into the exact prompts to run in ChatGPT so you can see whether you show up today, and against whom.
Generate your promptsHow do I know if it's working?
Track it like any other channel. Run the same set of buyer prompts every month, in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews, and log whether you appear, where, and who beats you. Movement in that log is the metric. Rankings are not, because the buyer never sees a ranking page anymore.
The business arithmetic is simple. If one additional shortlist appearance per month turns into one RFQ, and your close rate on RFQs is 25% at a $60,000 average project, that single mention is worth $15,000 in expected revenue. Being the answer is not a vanity goal. It is pipeline.
What if I'd rather have someone run this?
Fixing entity data, earning mentions, and restructuring content is a few months of steady work. If marketing is already a side duty at your shop, that work slips. Bootstrap Creative does this as a service for B2B manufacturers, and also manages ChatGPT ad campaigns for companies that want to buy placement beneath those answers while they earn their way into them. Either way, start with the baseline above so you know what you are fixing.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay ChatGPT to recommend my business?
No. OpenAI generates the organic answer first, then places labeled ads beneath it. Ads do not change what ChatGPT recommends inside the answer. The recommendation itself is earned through the same signals that shape any AI answer: clear entity data, third-party mentions, and structured content.
How long does it take to get recommended on ChatGPT?
Entity fixes can register within weeks as engines re-crawl and update their sources. Earning third-party mentions takes longer, usually a few months, because it depends on other sites publishing and getting indexed. Track it monthly so you can see movement instead of guessing.
How do I check if ChatGPT recommends my business right now?
Ask it the questions your buyers ask, in their own words, using a logged-out session so your history does not skew the answer. Record whether your brand appears, where it ranks in the list, and which competitors are named. The free AEO Prompt Generator builds that question list for you.
Does ChatGPT use Google to pick businesses?
Partly. ChatGPT draws on its training data and, for current questions, live web results and sources like Google's knowledge graph and Wikidata. That is why cleaning up your entity data across the web affects both Google and ChatGPT at once.
Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor instead of me?
Usually because the competitor is easier for the model to describe with confidence. They have consistent data, they are cited in the sources the model trusts, and their pages state specifics the model can quote. Close those three gaps and the gap in recommendations narrows.
