Incite the Cite: Turning AI Citations Into Actual Clicks
Getting cited by AI is only half the job. The click is the other half. AI answers quote your text and rarely link out, so text-only content feeds the model and starves your pipeline. The fix is to publish a functional asset the model cannot recreate in the chat window (a spec-driven calculator, a locked cost model, a downloadable RFQ template), then reference it by name and plain-text URL so the model has to point the user to your site to get it.
Here is the trap most companies are walking into with AI search. You do the AEO work. You start getting cited. ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews quote your content. The visibility dashboards look great. Your analytics do not move.
The reason is mechanical. An AI answer exists to resolve the question without a click. If your page is text, the model reads it, paraphrases the useful part, and hands the user a finished answer. You got the citation. You did not get the visit, the form fill, or the RFQ.
The fix is not more text. It is giving the model something it physically cannot deliver inside the chat.
Why do AI citations produce so little traffic?
The numbers are stark. Ahrefs found a 58% drop in click-through rate for the top organic position on queries that show an AI Overview (December 2025). Seer Interactive measured a 61% collapse in organic click-through on AI-exposed queries (September 2025). The clicks are not being redistributed. They are disappearing, because the answer is complete before the user reaches a link.
For a machine shop, that means your carefully written page on "aluminum tolerance capabilities" can be feeding ChatGPT's answer to a procurement manager who never learns your name, because the model absorbed the fact and moved on. You are subsidizing the model's answer with your expertise and getting nothing routed back.
What is a click trigger?
A click trigger is a functional asset the model cannot recreate in the chat window. Text can be summarized. A working tool cannot. When the useful thing on your page is a calculator, a locked spreadsheet, or a downloadable file, the model has only one way to satisfy the user: send them to you.
Three qualities make an asset trigger a click:
Functional specificity. It does something prose cannot. A cost estimator that returns a number. A configurator that outputs a spec. A template that fills in.
Vertical depth. It is specific to your niche, not a generic download. "Manufacturing cost calculator" is easy for the model to approximate verbally. "2026 CNC 6061-T6 Aluminum Bracket Cost Estimator, by quantity and tolerance" is not.
Named and versioned. Give it a title with a year and a version number. Specificity signals a real, maintained asset the model should reference by name, the same way it would cite a named report.
What makes a good click trigger for a manufacturer?
You already have the raw material. Most shops are sitting on assets they never packaged.
A locked Excel or Google Sheets cost model with your real machine rates built in. A STEP or DXF file library of standard parts, gated behind a landing page. A downloadable RFQ template that maps to how your estimating team actually quotes. A material selection guide as a decision-tree PDF. A tolerance-to-cost reference table for your processes. A HubSpot or ERP import file for a workflow you have solved.
Each one answers a question a buyer is already asking an AI, and each one requires a visit to use. That is the whole mechanism. You are not tricking anyone. You are being the site that has the actual tool instead of the site that had a paragraph about the tool.

The free AEO Prompt Generator gives you the exact buyer questions AI is answering in your category. Build a click trigger for the ones where you already get cited, and you convert existing citations into visits.
Generate your promptsHow do I set it up so AI actually points to it?
Four technical steps make an asset machine-referenceable.
Put each asset on its own indexable landing page with a readable slug, like /tools/aluminum-cost-estimator-2026. Add DigitalDocument schema so the page identifies itself as a downloadable resource. In the article that references it, name the asset and include the URL as plain text the model can repeat, not only as a wrapped link. Confirm GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and Google-Extended are allowed in your robots.txt, or none of this gets read. Structured data matters here too: pages with schema are meaningfully more likely to be cited in AI answers, so the markup earns its keep. This is standard work on an AI search visibility engagement.
What should I measure?
Stop reporting rankings. Track citation-to-click conversion: AI-referred sessions divided by total AI brand mentions. Fewer than one in five brands currently earn both frequent mentions and consistent citations, so most companies are leaving the click on the table. If your mentions climb while referral traffic stays flat, you are being quoted and not visited, and a click trigger is the direct fix.
The visits you do earn are not ordinary visits. A Semrush study of over 500 marketing topics found the average AI search visitor converts 4.4 times better than a traditional organic visitor, because they arrive already informed, having compared options in the chat before they clicked (Semrush, 2025). The click is rarer now, which means each one is worth more, which is exactly why engineering it pays instead of shrugging at the lost traffic.
The arithmetic decides it. If your AEO content earns fifty AI mentions a month and a functional asset converts even 8% of those to visits, that is four qualified visits from buyers who were mid-decision when the model sent them, each of them several times likelier to convert than a normal search visitor. For a shop where one RFQ is worth $60,000, you do not need many.
Frequently asked questions
What is a click trigger in AEO?
A click trigger is a functional asset an AI model cannot reproduce inside the chat, so it has to send the user to your site to use it. Examples for manufacturers include a tolerance-and-cost calculator, a locked spreadsheet estimating model, a downloadable STEP file library, or a version-stamped RFQ template. Prose can be summarized in-chat; a working tool cannot.
Why does AI cite my site but send no traffic?
AI answers are built to resolve the question inside the answer. If your page is text the model can paraphrase, it quotes you and the user never needs to click. Ahrefs measured a 58% drop in first-position click-through rate on queries with an AI Overview (December 2025). The content still gets used. The visit does not happen.
How do I make an asset AI has to link to?
Give it functional specificity (it does something text cannot), vertical depth (it is specific to your niche, not generic), and a named, versioned title like "2026 CNC Aluminum Cost Estimator v1.2". Put it on its own indexable landing page, add DigitalDocument schema, and reference it in your article with a plain-text URL the model can repeat.
Should I still write text content for AEO?
Yes. Text is how you get cited in the first place. The point is to pair strong text with at least one functional asset per major article, so the citation has somewhere to send the reader. Text earns the mention; the asset earns the visit.
What metric should I track instead of rankings?
Track citation-to-click conversion: AI-referred visits divided by total AI mentions of your brand. It tells you whether your citations are producing traffic. Rising mentions with flat referral traffic means you are being quoted but not visited, which is the exact problem a click trigger solves.
