AEO vs SEO vs GEO: What's Different and What Still Matters
SEO gets you ranked on a results page. AEO and GEO get you named inside the answer. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) competes for links on Google. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) are effectively the same discipline under two names: earning a mention in AI-generated answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. They share fundamentals with SEO but shift the goal from ranking to being cited.
Three acronyms describe the same shift from three angles. The alphabet soup makes it sound like three separate jobs. It is closer to one job that grew a second half.
What does each acronym actually mean?
SEO, Search Engine Optimization, is the original: make your pages rank in the list of links Google returns. Decades of practice, well understood, still real.
AEO, Answer Engine Optimization, is the newer goal: make your brand appear inside the answer an AI engine generates, whether that is ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overview. Not a link in a list. A mention in the response itself.
GEO, Generative Engine Optimization, means the same thing as AEO. It emphasizes that the answers are generated by a model rather than retrieved from an index. Two names, one discipline. Pick whichever your team likes and move on.
How are they actually different?
The clearest way to see it is the shape of what you are competing for.
SEO competes for position in a list. There are ten spots, and you want a high one. Success is a ranking, and the payoff is a click.
AEO and GEO compete for inclusion in a single answer. There is no list, only the response and whether your name is in it. Success is a citation, and the payoff is being the source the buyer contacts.
That difference changes the inputs you work on. SEO leans on keywords, backlinks, and on-page optimization. AEO leans on three things that matter far more to a model: whether it can identify you without ambiguity, whether independent sources vouch for you, and whether your content is structured so the machine can lift the answer with your name attached.
The ranking-versus-citation gap is measurable. A Semrush study of over 500 marketing topics found ChatGPT cites pages ranking on the third page of traditional results or lower (position 21 and beyond) roughly 90% of the time (Semrush, 2025). A page can be nearly invisible in classic SEO terms and still be the source an AI quotes. That is AEO and SEO pulling on different levers, in one statistic.
What still carries over from SEO?
Most of the fundamentals. Clear, credible, well-organized content is what AI engines draw on, so the substance of good SEO feeds AEO directly. Technical health, fast pages, and clean information architecture still help. Schema markup, always a nice-to-have in SEO, becomes central in AEO because it is how machines read your pages.
What does not carry over is the scorecard. Reporting rankings and sessions tells you almost nothing about AI visibility. You need a new measurement: whether the engines name you when buyers ask.
Measure the AEO side
Your rank tracker cannot see AI answers. The free AEO Prompt Generator builds the buyer prompts to check whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews cite you, and against which competitors.
Generate your promptsWhere should you spend your effort?
On both, because your buyers use both. A procurement manager might start in ChatGPT, verify in Google, and land on a traditional result. Abandoning SEO cedes the buyers who still search the old way. Ignoring AEO cedes the growing share who ask AI first.
The practical path: keep the SEO fundamentals that build clear, authoritative content, then extend them into AEO with entity cleanup, third-party mentions, and citation tracking. The AEO framework lays out that extension in three steps. The acronyms will keep multiplying. The work underneath them is stable: be identifiable, be trusted by others, be quotable.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between SEO and AEO?
SEO optimizes to rank in a list of links on a search results page. AEO optimizes to be named inside an AI-generated answer. SEO competes for ten blue links; AEO competes for one synthesized answer. The underlying signals overlap, but the target and the scorecard differ.
Is GEO the same as AEO?
In practice, yes. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) and AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) both describe getting your brand into AI-generated answers. Different people and tools prefer different acronyms. Do not spend energy on the distinction; the work is the same.
Does SEO still help with AEO?
Yes. Strong, well-structured, authoritative content is the raw material AI engines draw on. Good SEO fundamentals feed AEO. The difference is that AEO adds emphasis on clear entity data, third-party citations, and machine-readable structure, and it measures citations rather than rankings.
Which should a B2B company focus on?
Both, because buyers still use traditional search and AI answers. Keep the SEO fundamentals that produce clear, credible content, then extend them into AEO by fixing entity data, earning third-party mentions, and tracking whether AI engines cite you. Neglecting AI visibility is the bigger risk in 2026.
