Why Your Traffic Is Dropping Even Though Your Rankings Didn't
If your rankings held but your traffic fell, an AI Overview is almost certainly answering the query above your link. Google now resolves many searches on the results page itself, so the user never clicks through. Confirm it in Search Console by finding queries where impressions are steady or rising but clicks dropped, then check whether those queries trigger an AI Overview. The fix is to become the source the AI cites and to give readers a reason to visit anyway.
The report looks broken. Your target keywords sit right where they did last year. Your organic traffic is down 20, 30, 40 percent. Nothing you changed explains it, because you did not change anything. The cause is not on your site. It is on the results page, above your link.
What's actually happening?
Google now answers a large share of searches with an AI Overview: a generated summary that sits at the top of the page. When it resolves the question, the user reads the answer and moves on. Your page still ranks below. It just does not get clicked, because the reason to click is already satisfied.
The scale is not small. AI Overviews reach over 1.5 billion people a month, and Ahrefs measured a 58% drop in click-through rate for the top organic position on queries where an Overview appears (December 2025). Your ranking is intact. The traffic model underneath it changed.
How do I confirm it's AI Overviews?
Google Search Console has the evidence. Pull your organic performance for a recent window and compare it to the same window a year ago. Sort by clicks lost. You are looking for a specific signature: queries where impressions stayed flat or grew, but clicks fell. Steady impressions mean you still rank and still get shown. Falling clicks on the same query mean something is intercepting the visit.
Take your ten biggest click losers and search each one in an incognito window. If an AI Overview appears for most of them, you have your answer. That gap between impressions and clicks is the tax AI search is charging on your best-ranking pages.
See if AI names you in those answers
The next question is whether the AI is citing you or a competitor when it answers. The free AEO Prompt Generator builds the buyer prompts to check exactly that across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google.
Generate your promptsWhat do I do about it?
You cannot go back to the old click behavior. You can change what you optimize for.
Become the cited source. If the AI is going to answer the question, be the site it quotes, by name. That means being the clearest, most specific, best-structured page on that question, with schema markup so the machine can parse it.
Give a reason to visit anyway. An AI answer can summarize your text. It cannot run your calculator, hand over your downloadable template, or open your spec file. Pair your best pages with a functional asset the answer cannot contain, and you convert a citation into a click. That single move is the most reliable traffic recovery available right now.
Track the new scoreboard. Log which queries lost clicks to Overviews and whether AI engines cite you on those topics. That log replaces the ranking report as your early-warning system. If this is more monitoring than your team can own, it is the kind of thing a lead generation audit is built to surface.
Frequently asked questions
Why did my organic traffic drop but rankings stayed the same?
An AI Overview or featured answer is resolving the query on the results page. Your page still ranks, but the user gets the answer without scrolling to your link, so the click never happens. This shows up as steady impressions with falling clicks in Google Search Console.
How do I confirm AI Overviews are costing me traffic?
In Google Search Console, compare a recent period to the same period last year and sort by clicks lost. For your biggest losers, search those queries yourself in an incognito window and see whether an AI Overview appears. Steady impressions plus dropped clicks plus a visible AI Overview is the signature.
Can I stop Google from using my content in AI Overviews?
You can block Google-Extended in robots.txt, but that mostly affects some AI training uses and can reduce your presence in AI answers without restoring the old click behavior. For most businesses, competing to be the cited source beats trying to opt out of the system entirely.
What can I do to recover the lost traffic?
Shift the goal from clicks to citations and add reasons to visit. Make your page the clearest source on the question so the AI quotes you by name, then give the reader something the answer cannot contain: a calculator, a downloadable template, a spec file. That converts a citation into a visit.
